wireless computer network

Wireless computer network becomes the fastest growing computer tasks today. Building the wireless computer network is getting easier with the availability of the wireless devices at the marketplace which are simpler, faster, versatile, and more secure than before.

With the wireless computer network in home or in the office, you no longer have to pull networking cables or hunt under your desk, usually in an unlit area, trying to find the right ports and cables. You can browse the internet with your laptop at your pool side, or you can make unlimited calls to all over the world with your Wi-Fi phone using your Skype account everywhere within the house without you need to turn on your computer.

Unlike wired network which uses LAN cables, wireless computer networking refers to connecting two or more computers using radio transmitter/receivers (sometimes called transceivers) to allow file and print sharing, and also share the Internet connection on each computers on the network. With wireless computer network, you can move the computers (with the wireless adapter) everywhere within the network coverage without loosing network connection. Or you can Go-Live game with your XBOX console at the comfort of the living room without the clutter of the wires.

Wireless computer network might also contain other wireless elements including:

  • Storage array network (SAN), printer, and other media shared over the network. See also networking printer to share printer over the network.
  • Network hardware that has wires, including the Cable or DSL modem, and Switches. See also Cable modem router SBG900.
  • A wireless access point that bridges the wireless devices to the wired network.

The following picture shows a typical wireless computer network infrastructure including the modem which allows the computers to share the broadband internet connection. See also the concept of sharing the internet connection.

For home usage, you can use any types of wireless routers and suitable modem (Cable or DSL) to build a home wireless computer network.

Benefits of Wireless Computer Network

Wireless computer network offers some benefits over the wired network, no hassle of running the wires, and the most obvious is the portability. With your laptop equipped by the Wi-Fi adapter, you can roam around your house, or you can roam around the café or other public hotspots, or even you can connect to the corporate network or your private SOHO network via public Internet securely via IPSec VPN connection (if the VPN feature is enabled). Moving Your Equipment at Will

With the wireless computer network in your house, you can surf the Internet by your pool, your fireplace, or anywhere else in your house within the range up to 1400 ft with certain smart antenna MIMO technology. More commonly, though, you might find that wireless networking equipment allows you to move your desktop and laptop computers around the house or around your desk or across the room without unplugging cables.

The convenience that wireless computer network provides is obviously a good fit for laptops. But if you want to create a network quickly, and place the equipment wherever you want, without worrying about wires, a wireless computer network is really the way to go.

Sharing Broadband Internet Connection

The most important technology widely deployed all over the world for home consumer audience is the introduction of the broadband internet services either Cable or xDSL. Broadband is very fast internet connection technology which can transmit data many times faster than analog modem. Cable modems provide high-speed access over regular TV cable lines. Many manufacturers ship all-in-one device which integrate the function of modem, the router / firewall, the 4-port Switch, and a wireless access point – packed in one box such as SURFboard SBG900 for cable. Sharing Printers and CD and Hard Drives

The capability to share peripherals is another good reason to set up a wireless computer network. Any printer connected to a computer on your network can be shared by any other computer on the network. In addition, you can use a hardware device, called a printer server, to share a printer on your network without connecting the printer to a PC. Some wireless routers include a USB port which can be used to share USB enable printer for sharing a printer over the network.

When you set up your wireless computer network, you can share any CD-ROM/DVD drive from any computer on the network. For instance, you can install a software program from a CD-ROM in a desktop computer on a wirelessly connected laptop elsewhere in your house. Or, from your desktop computer, you can access a file stored on the hard drive of a laptop. The files on the hard drive of a networked computer appear in a folder, just as they would on your local hard drive.
