In early 2011 NETGEAR introduced New WNDR4000 N750 and WNDR3800 N600 Premium edition into its lines of high performance router products which are designed for video streaming and gaming. Actually Netgear released WNDR37AV in the middle of 2010 which is powered by the ratified version of 802.11n and is DLNA compliant router, designed for video and gaming. So what are actually the main differences? It’s about the speed. WNDR37AV is based on N600 technology delivering the speeds of up to 300Mbps each band. On the other hand, WNDR4000 is powered by N750 technology, delivering the high speeds of up to 450Mbps (for 5GHz band) and 300Mbps (for 2.4GHz band) for total up to 750Mbps both bands. But those are ideal physical speeds; they never reach those speeds in reality due to many factors and conditions.
What are differences between Wndr4000 Vs Wndr3800?
To better understand the differences, table 1 shows you spec comparison between the two routers and another router from different vendor Asus RT-N56U – the new router by Asus.
These routers support simultaneous dual band to let you connect mix wireless devices which work based on either 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency bands at the same time. With dual band, you can double your bandwidth demands. Network with 5GHz band is relatively clean, less interference than the crowded 2.4GHz band. You can connect to 5GHz band for smooth HD video streaming and fast responsive online gaming.
The WNDR4000 and WNDR3800 are embedded with Gigabit Ethernet ports for both WAN (1 port) and LAN (4 ports) interfaces. For optimum data throughput between the router and the modem you should connect the router to Gigabit Ethernet modem such as SBG6120 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem (for Cable broadband internet).
Secure Guest Access
The capability of segregating the network becomes important today. Should you run small offices, providing Internet access for your guests without compromising your network resources is very essential. All new Netgear high performance routers support Guest network access. You can create separate network name (SSID) each band with different password, limited access, without granting access to your local network. But Asus RT-N56U doesn’t support guest network feature.
USB Port
Both WNDR4000 and WNDR3800 include one USB port. Both routers can be used to share the storage to be accessible across the network. You can format the drive using FAT16/32 or NTFS Read/Write format.
The main difference is WNDR4000 cannot be used to host printer but WNDR3800 can. Since there is only one single USB port, you cannot host a storage and printer at the same. If the requirements of sharing the printer and storage concurrently exist, you should find other routers that include two USB ports that allow you share storage and printer concurrently such as new ASUS RT-N56U Black Diamond or Trendnet TEW-673GRU.

Connecting Diagram
Both routers have the same common networking diagram as shown in figure below. For connecting multiple Ethernet-based home theater devices, you should install wireless media bridge with multiple Ethernet ports such as Buffalo WLI-TX4-AG300N. It’s a wireless N300 dual band wireless media bridge to let you connect XBOX console, Blu-Ray player, HDTV etc.
