A simple networking computers connects two computers or laptops together to share the internet connection at home. Commonly the ISP (Internet Service Provider) will give you an ADSL modem but in some region you need to buy yourself, which has USB port; RJ-45 port; and phone line port as in the picture below. But usually you need to purchase a more practical wireless router (such as NETGEAR modem router or Linksys by Cisco wireless router) which commonly has 4 built-in Ethernet RJ-45 ports for wired connection using network cabling. The wireless devices would be easier since you don’t need the cost and hassle of running network cables. You can find any types of wireless adapter at the market such as USB type wireless card that can work both for desktop and laptops; wireless PCI adapter that will fit to your desktop and even PCMCIA wireless adapter for your laptops.
The ISP technician usually installs the ADSL modem into the computer with USB connection. A computer is usually coming with the built-in NIC Adapter and the RJ-45 connector for UTP LAN cable connection to the networking computers.

What happen if you have 2 computers or laptops at home that would like to share the internet connection? The answer is networking computers in a simple LAN, connect them with a simple 4 port / 8 port switch or if you use the wireless router device, it has built-in RJ-45 ports already and even you can connect laptops with Wi-Fi capable to connect wirelessly.
Let’s have a look at simple networking computers with modem and switch. So, how to connect them? A home networking computers is not as complicated as in the large organization with complicated redundant local area network connection which has several servers such as name servers which are commonly integrated into the domain controller active directory ; exchanges, DHCP servers, and databases servers. For a better connection you can use the LAN port of the modem connected to one of the switch port using the cross UTP cable that come with the modem (usually the blue UTP cable). You do not need the USB cable connection from the modem to the computer, just unplug the USB cable. The picture below is the networking diagram of networking computers at home.

You need to run the UTP straight through cable from the switch to both computer and laptop. You can buy straight through UTP cable with RJ-45 connector ready to use from the computer store.
The splitter connector splits the telephone lines from the public telephone into two branches, one branch is connected to the modem phone line port and the other line is connected to the telephone handset.
The other thing that you need to do is to make sure that the LAN card connection is configured to “obtain the IP address automatically”. Usually if you never touch the Lan card connection of your computer or laptop, the default is set to “obtain the IP address automatically”. How can you do that?
| 1. Locate the ‘lan connection’ icon at the right side of the bottom corner of your screen.
2. If you cannot find the icon click Start => Select Control Panel => locate ‘Network Connection’ icon and double click it => jump to step 4 |
|
| 3. Right click this ‘lan connection icon’ and then select the ‘Open Network Connection’ | |
| 4. Right click the ‘lan connection’ icon and then select ‘Property’ => then select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) => click ‘Property’ | ![]() |
| 5. Make sure in this ‘General’ tab both radio button are selected to ‘obtain an IP address automatically’ and ‘obtain DNS server address automatically’ | ![]() |
What about the IP addressing for the computers on the network? Don’t worry, both type of ADSL modem and wireless router are capable of serving as the DHCP server.
That’s all, and then you can share the internet connection with simple networking computers at home.
