NAS With RAID 5 feature

Data information is valuable assets for your businesses that must be protected against any lost or damage like other business assets. One of the efforts in protecting your information asset is by providing a secure way storing it using the NAS RAID. Network Access Storage (NAS) with RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) capability is a type of redundancy storage. With Raid NAS you can assure the availability of your information.

With NAS RAID you can configure the disks to support any types of Raid mode including RAID 0 to RAID 5 or RAID 6. Typically storages with RAID features are configured in RAID level 1 or RAID 5. In RAID 1 you need two sets of identical had disks but most implementation of RAID 1 only consists of two disks, one disk becomes the mirror.

NAS in RAID 5 implementation consists of at least three disks, the total of disk space is calculated as the total number of disks minus one (as the parity check). So if you have identical 4 disks with 1TB each, the total disk space is (4-1) TB. The good thing with this model is that in case of one disk failure, the system storage is still running as normal even with reduced performance. The information stored in RAID 5 NAS is not affected.

NAS with RAID 5 configuration is mostly used in small to medium businesses. Even in large networking with multiple numbers of rack mount servers configured in server load balance and clustering, the NAS is typically configured with RAID 5 mode.

The following lists some of NAS with RAID features:

DSN-343 D Link NAS with RAID

The DNS-343 includes four-bay storage and by default is preloaded with 1T hard drives each bay with RAID 5 technology. You can upgrade the capacity to include four 3.5” SATA hard drives. It comes with feature-rich backup software to let you manage the backup strategy including full monthly and incremental daily backups.

For home users with home theater devices including XBOX, Blu-Ray player, HDTV – no worries the system includes the built-in FTP server (to let you access the files across the internet) and UPnP media server to let you stream high definition media stored in the NAS RAID to your streaming devices easily.

The other beauty of this RAID NAS is that it includes the USB port to let you host a shared printer accessible across the network eliminating the requirement of print-server. One more thing you need to know with this NAS is that it is equipped with the OLED display to let you know what’s going on with the NAS including the hard drives statistic, temperature, RAID status and FTP/UPnP server status.

WD Share-Space 4TB includes four bays with gigabit Ethernet port. This WD Share-Space supports NAS RAID 0/1/5 to meet your need. But most implementation uses the NAS in RAID 5 mode. Like the D Link DNS-343 NAS RAID, this WD storage supports built-in UPnP with DLNA certified. With DLNA certified the storage can connect to any types of DLNA certified devices seamlessly. For Mac users, the storage supports iTunes server.

Any implementation of computer networking with windows server and Active Directory, the WD share-space supports the Windows AD to let you create group policies in managing the storage easily and securely.

Accessing the files across the internet is getting easier with the included MioNet remote access services from WD. With the built-in FTP server you can manage the access right and the document shared easily.

Unlike the above two RAID NAS, the Readynas Pro6 is designed with full rich-features for business scale computer networking which is powered by Intel multi-core processor. As general the NAS RAID is powered by NETGEAR RAIDiator operating system to ease you setup, can be integrated with your Windows server Active Directory and two manageable Gigabit Ethernet ports for link aggregation and failover.

The Readynas PRO6 NAS supports RAID 0,1,5,6,10 you can configure to meet your business need. It supports advanced security features including local users, AD integrated with your Windows server, encryption, SSL and CHAP. It also supports network services including DHCP server, WINS, VLAN and LACP for load balancing and failover. You can assign the NAS with static IP address or DHCP client, but static IP address is recommended.

Should your network environment uses the Symantec backup Exec, you can purchase the Symantec agent to support this device to let you integrate it into your backup system strategy so you can include the NAS into your backup jobs.

Choose your storage strategy by implementing NAS with RAID 5 configuration for the availability and security of your business information asset.
