One of the tasks to do in setting up the network environment is to perform LAN setting of the computers and servers that would like to join the networking environment. Basically what you need to do is to set your LAN connection TCP/IP property to “obtain the IP address automatically”. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a home networking (using “wired” connection or using wireless networking such as with Linksys router) or domain environment in the corporate network.
When the LAN setting of a computer in home environment, the “obtain IP address automatically” setting will receive the IP address from the APIPA scheme. When the LAN setting of the computers in a domain environment, the “obtain the IP address automatically” setting will receive the IP address from the DHCP server in your organization.
LAN setting for home network environment does not need a complex task to do. In a “wired” home networking that would like to share the internet services from your ISP is quite easy. As soon as you have completed the setting-up of the broadband internet connection to the ISP, you just need to plug the computers or laptop to the switch and the network is ready to go.
The LAN setting for a home wireless connection with wireless router (such as Netgear) is also easy. As soon as you have completed following step-by-step network wizard instruction from the installation CD included with the router (including allocating the IP address for DHCP pool addresses), the computer or laptops that would like to join the network using the wireless adapter (whether USB Wireless adapters; PCI adapters or PCMCI wireless cards) is just plug into the port (for USB wireless card) and it is ready to go (assuming they have been authorized by the system).
What about the LAN setting for computers that would like to join the domain network environment in the corporate organization? It’s a bit more complicated and only authorize person who belongs to account administrator can do a join domain.
Network setup – the computers
The most efficient network setup for the computers connected to the network is to set the LAN connection to receive the IP address automatically from the DHCP server. The default setting after a fresh OS installation of a computer is “obtain the IP address automatically”. It will not be efficient to setup hundreds of computers in the network with fix IP address one by one. Check out the article about simple networking computers that discuss about sharing the internet connection at home, it shows you a way to “obtain the IP address automatically”.
LAN setting – the servers
All the servers must have fix IP address and registered to the DNS server, because the server will be accessed by the users using the server name instead of the IP address. You also need to have the naming standard of the servers when you design the network configuration which registers the naming standard and the fix IP addresses used. Network setup for the fix IP address will need to configure the following:
1. IP Address
2. Subnet mask
3. Preferred DNS server and or Alternate DNS server
4. Wins server (if required)
Instead of selecting ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’, you need to select ‘Use the following IP address’ radio button and type in the IP address as in your documentation register. Refer to the Guinea Smelter scenario – IP addresses register in the network configuration article, for the preferred and alternate DNS servers you can use GUISML-HR-DC01 and GUISML-HR-DC02 IP addresses (192.168.100.253 and 192.168.100.252).
