HP Rack Mount Computer Servers

When your business grows, the needs of your servers and storage grow as well. This means that you need more space; more network cabling, and more power / UPSs. If you bought tower servers as your first servers, when you need to expand the number of tower servers then you need more space horizontally. This will create a problem when your server room is not large enough. It is therefore, a rack mount computer server is a good solution when you need to expand the servers, storage, and powers in the future.

With rack mount computer servers, you can easily expand the number of servers, storage, and powers using the rack mount system. Mostly server manufacturers ship their own rack mount system to support their rack mount servers, the storage, the backup device, and the power supply into a single rack system. This is very advantageous to help you save the space, easy to maintain and help you optimize the power management and cooling capacity.

The following two servers are rack mount computer servers by HP for small to medium sized business networks.

HP ProLiant DL380 G6 Server

DL380 G6 is a 2U rack mount computer server. The server includes 2 socket Intel® Xeon® (Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 series with Intel Turbo Boost technology), and 2U density for a variety of applications. It supports up to 192GB of DDR3 memory.

DL380 G6 is embedded with the Smart array RAID controller and Serial attached SCSI (SAS) to support up to 16 SAS drives. You can configure the SAS devices in RAID 5 configuration for better performance. RAID 5 system is faster in reading the data but slower in writing. But one of the advantages of the RAID 5 system is that you will not loose your data or disrupt your application system when one of the disks fails. You can replace the faulty disk later without the need of shutting down the server, thus keeps the uptime of your production system. See also Adaptec SCSI RAID controller.

HP ProLiant DL320 G6 Server

Unlike DL380 with 2U-2way rack mount, the HP ProLiant DL320 G6 Server is a 2U-1way rack mount computer server which supports for the Intel® Xeon® processor 5600 series. The processor is the next generation of intelligent four and six core processors with significant performance (up to 40% over single-core processors).

HP Proliant DL-320 rack mount computer server

DL320 supports for up to four 3.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives, plus an integrated SATA controller that supports RAID 0 or RAID 1. With RAID 0 you can configure the hard disks as the stripped volume. While in RAID 1, you can configure the hard disks as mirror volume. Unlike DL380 which is embedded with smart array and SAS, the DL320 supports the optional for hot plug SATA or Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard drives when using an optional HBA (Host Bus Adapter) or RAID card, support for hot plug hard drives. This is very helpful in hard disks redundancy system – you can change the faulty disk when the system is running – no need to shutdown the server.

In building computer server infrastructure, make sure you choose the rack mount computer servers to help you save the space and easy to manage and maintain when you should expand the number of servers in the future.
