adsl2 modem with router function

Broadband ADSL internet connection in many countries is so popular compared to Cable services because ADSL service uses existing Telephone lines infrastructure for transmission medium. When you signup for ADSL services, generally the ISP provides you an ADSL / ADSL2 modem router and connect direct to a single computer. What you should do when you would like to build a wireless home computer network and share the internet connection?

Generally when you need to build a wireless home computer network with your existing modem either Cable or ADSL modem, you add a wireless router as the heart of the network. But many people make mistakes in adding a wireless access point to the modem and find that they cannot share the internet connection with many computers but only one client computer can connect to the internet in a time. Why? Because the modem is a pure modem – a modem without a NAT feature or a router function. But with ADSL2 modem router, you can connect a wireless AP to build a wireless home computer network and share the internet.

Network address translation (NAT) is a feature to map a single public IP address to the private IP addresses (your home internal network). With NAT you can share a single Internet connection with many computers in the network. TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router is a modem with the router / NAT function to allow you add a wireless AP to create a wireless home computer network. ). The NAT feature also helps you hide your internal network from the wild internet.

TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router include one 10/100Mbps Auto-MDIX RJ-45 Ethernet port you can use to connect the wireless access point such as TEW-690AP N450 Wireless Access Point to expand the network wirelessly. You don’t need a wireless router because the modem includes the router function. Actually there are many wireless routers that can be configured either as the router or access point such as Buffalo High power routers WZR-HP-G300NH. The router can be switched from router to access point mode via an external switch.

TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router includes a DHCP server to provide the IP address configuration automatically to all the computers in your network. With DHCP server enabled, you don’t need to manually configure each of the computers with the static IP address, the IP address will be received dynamically from the DHCP server.

Alternate Solution

The TDM-C500 ADSL2 modem router provides you the flexibility in choosing the wireless access point to create a wireless home computer network or any SOHO networks. In your small offices you can connect the modem to a gigabit LAN switch for wired connections to many desktop computers (with gigabit ready) or servers for high speed connections and couple of ports for connecting to the wireless APs for expanding the wireless access within the office.

Another similar ADSL2 modem is Actiontec GT701D which includes one Ethernet port (10/100Mbps) you can connect to the switch for more node extensions or just connect direct t o a single computer. This modem-router device is very popular and it consumes 30% less power than similar products. Actiontec also offers you an all-in-one device which includes four Ethernet ports and built-in wireless N access point – GT784WN. This is a good solution eliminating separate Switch and Access point devices – ADSL2 modem with built-in wireless N access point.

Similar product, Netgear offers you high performance DGND3700 ADSL2 N600 dual band Gigabit router, all-in-one device ideal for streaming and gaming in homes. It also includes one USB port to let you share external disk storage, but you can use it for sharing the printer.
